The Altai Region
“The Altai Region has rolling foothills, grasslands, lakes, rivers, and mountains. The climate is varied with long cold dry winters and hot, usually dry summers. The region’s main waterway is the Ob River. The Biya, Katun and Chuya Rivers are also important. The biggest lakes are Lake Kulundinskoye, Lake Kuchukskoye, and Lake Mikhaylovskoye. The Altai Region has huge reserves of raw materials, especial materials used for building, as well as significant mineral reserves. These include nonferrous metals, lead and iron ores, manganese, tungsten, molybdenum, bauxite, and gold. Forests cover about 60,000 km of the land.”
Altai’s name speaks for itself. The name comes from the Turkic “Al” (gold) and “tau” (mountains). Rightly so, you can confidently say that by the number, diversity and beauty of its natural monuments, Altai is one of the richest places in the world.
But Altai - it is not only a phenomenal combination of diverse landscapes, fascinating flora and fauna, vast mineral and natural resources. This area has a rich historical past, as evidenced by the hundreds of thousands archaeological sites. You can find our “museums” everywhere in the nature. There, you can see rock art, sometimes completely covering the rock, stone sculptures and runic letters, mounds and ancient cave houses and much more. It’s just impossible to list all the amazing wonders of the Altai Region, as it is impossible to transmit through words all the colors, smells and sounds of this place. We’d rather invite you to come visit us and start an exciting journey in this amazing region to see by yourself.
